Travel and Accommodation

Venue

The summer school is going to take place at the Hotel Panhans in the small town of Semmering in Austria (find on map). Semmering is famous for its skiing and has hosted the Alpine skiing World Cup several times, and in summer the lifts and pistes serve as a bikepark with numerous trails. The eponymous mountain pass Semmering is also a nice hiking area, and the climbing crag Adlitzgraben is in the vicinity. The International Ludwig Wittgenstein Institute has its offices and a permanent exhibition (Ludwig Wittgenstein: Reality and Myth) in the close by Kirchberg am Wechsel.

When the famous Semmering railway was completed in 1854, the region became a popular destination for the nobility from Vienna (emperor Charles I, the last ruler of the Austro-Hungarian empire, and his son Otto were regular guests) as well as famous Austrian artists (such as Oskar Kokoschka and Karl Kraus).

Directions from Vienna

Directions to Vienna can be found on the website of the Vienna Summer of Logic. The train from Vienna to Semmering leaves at Wien Meidling. If you arrive at the airport, the train station Meidling can be reached by bus (bus 1187, direction Westbahnhof, hop off at Wien Dörfelstraße/Meidling Bahnhof) or by the suburban train (S7 direction Floridsdorf, change at Wien Rennweg, then take S2 direction Meidling; schedule). Avoid the CAT, since it is overpriced and there’s no direct connection from the airport to Meidling.

Semmering can be reached from Wien Meidling by train in just above an hour. Take the train from Wien Meidling to Semmering. Train schedules are available from the web-pages of the ÖBB. Group tickets are available for 3 or more people. If you want to travel by car, you can find directions on the website of the Hotel Panhans.

There is a foot path from the train station Semmering to the hotel Panhans (see map). Alternatively you can contact the hotel one day before your arrival to book a shuttle, or take a taxi (the Zau[:ber:]g website recommends Taxi Melcher, tel. +43 (0)664-9116180 or ta.noanull@rehclemixat).
